Approved Journal List

Candidate must publish at least one manuscript in the field of sports medicine and rehabilitation to be accepted for the credentialing exam of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation®. The journal must be either on the approved journal list or if the candidate wishes to submit to a journal not on the list, that journal needs to be approved by the residency committee.

Resident Resources
Annual Progress Report - Due August 1st

All residents must submit an Annual Progress Report in accordance with the Guidelines associated with residency training program. The Credentials and Residency Committee will evaluate the Annual Progress Report and recommendations and requirements will be forwarded to the resident and their resident program director.

Progress reports are due by August 1st each year and should include the entire residency training exeperiences.

The annual report consists of:

Credentials - Submit by August 1st

Once a resident fulfills the requirements of an American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation® residency training program and have an accepted for publication manuscript, applicants submit credentials for the board-certification examination. Credentials must be received by midnight, August 1st of the calendar year prior to the examination (examinations are generally held in January or February and specific exam information is released annually).

The following forms must be uploaded as part of credential submission, and the credentials submission fee listed below must be paid.

  • Resident Credentials Submission Form
  • Credentials submission fee of $350
  • Residency Program MasterLog (completed Residency MasterLog)
  • Signature pages for MasterLog and reports (can be uploaded separately if needed)
  • Peer-reviewed publication, accepted for publication
  • Letter of recommendation from American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation® supervisor/mentor
  • Two letters of recommendation from active diplomates of ABVS-recognized colleges
Examination - Register by November 1st

After an applicant submits credentials and receives confirmation that they are approved, an applicant must submit the Examination Registration Form and pay the examination fee. Exam registrations and payment are due by midnight Mountain Time (MT), November 1st.

Please do not submit the registration form or payment before credentials are approved. Once the examination registration form and payment are submitted, an applicant will receive details regarding the examination for the upcoming year.

To prepare for the examination, applicants may wish to review the following rubrics and reading lists. Lists are updated yearly in the June prior to the examination:

2024 Examination

The 2024 board-certification examination will be held remotely February 23-24, 2024.

  • Examination fee of $1,000 (full examination fee) or $500 (partial examination fee)

Once your credentials have been approved, you will receive a link to register for the exam and payment instructions.

The deadline for cancellation of the exam for a full refund is December 15, 2023. Please contact the ACVSMR secretary by email (secretary@vsmr.org) to cancel the exam. If unforeseeable circumstances arise prior to the examination but after the deadline, refund of fees will be based on a case-by-case assessment by the examination committee. Please note that this does not guarantee a refund of funds.
