Enhancing Performance Through Veterinary Innovation

Join Dr. Felix Duerr and Dr. Jose Garcia-Lopez as they present groundbreaking insights into sports medicine for companion and sporting animals. These sessions will highlight the synergy of diagnostic advancements and therapeutic strategies to elevate veterinary care standards. Attendees will gain actionable knowledge regarding cutting-edge research and clinical applications designed to improve animal care.

Part 1:  The Impact of ACVSMR Research on Canine Patients Challenges, Breakthroughs and Opportunities presented by Dr. Felix Duerr, DACVS, DECVS, DACVSMR

Dr. Duerr will provide a description of common outcome measures and study designs used in clinical trials relevant to ACVSMR. He will provide insight into and discussion of the pitfalls of performing and interpreting clinical trials data.

Part 2:  Advances in Cervical Imaging to guide decision making from surgery to injectable therapeutics presented by Jose M. Garcia-Lopez, VMD, DACVS, DACVSMR

Advances in cervical imaging have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of equine athletes, particularly those experiencing neck pain or neurological deficits. High-resolution diagnostic tools such as computed tomography (CT), myelography, and ultrasound have enhanced the ability to visualize cervical structures with exceptional detail. This has resulted in a better understanding of conditions such as osteoarthritis, cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), radiculopathy, and traumatic fractures.  This presentation will explore how state-of-the-art cervical imaging techniques are enhancing medical and surgical planning with the goal of improving outcomes when managing our equine athletes.  In addition, this presentation will briefly discuss surgical advances in the management of different cervical conditions, from foraminotomy to the use of equine-specific 3D-printed implants.

From Discovery to Recovery: A One-Health Perspective

Join Dr. Nicole Ehrhart, a veterinary surgeon and the Director of the Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging at CSU, and Dr. Chris Stackpole, Vice President of Athletic Care for elite sports organizations, as they explore the intersection of cutting-edge research and practical application. Their sessions will uncover how veterinary and human advancements in sports medicine are transforming our current understanding of animal athletes and veterinary care, bridging the gap between discovery and recovery for our animal athletes.

Part 1Great Danes, Grandads and the Science of Longevity presented by Dr. Nicole Ehrhart, VMD, MS, DACVS, ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology

This lecture will explore the profound insights companion dogs provide into the biology of aging and age-related diseases. Drawing on her expertise in comparative aging biology and regenerative medicine, Ehrhart delves into how the unique aging patterns of dogs serve as powerful models for understanding human health and longevity. From studying shared environments to unraveling the genetics of lifespan and resilience, she highlights how our canine companions are shaping the future of health span and longevity for both pets and people.

Part 2:  From Human Athletes to Veterinary Champions: Lessons from Elite Human Athletes to Veterinary Sports Medicine presented by  Dr. Chris Stackpole, PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS

Dr. Stackpole will focus on his work in injury prevention and athlete performance monitoring and how it relates to our veterinary population.

Imaging and Wearable Technology: Revolutionizing Veterinary Diagnostics and Monitoring in Animal Athletes

Join Dr. Chris Frye and Dr. Cristobal Navas de Solis as they delve into advanced imaging techniques shaping veterinary sports medicine. Dr. Frye will discuss the pivotal role of musculoskeletal ultrasound, while Dr. Navas de Solis will provide an in-depth exploration of the impact of cardiovascular monitoring on equine performance. This is an unmissable opportunity to learn from two leaders in veterinary innovation.

Part 1:  Focused Imaging: The Role of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Canine Sports Medicine presented by Dr. Chris Frye, DVM, DACVSMR

Dr. Frye will link into an MS US component of the 2026 laboratory.   He will focus on a review of the role of MS ultrasound in our veterinary population. This talk is a planned prelude to ACVSMR’s planned MS ultrasound laboratory for the 2026 Symposium.

Part 2 The Evolution of Wearable technology : The Role of wearable technology in Assessing Cardiovascular Health, fitness and prevent injury in Equine Athletes presented by Dr. Cristobal Navas de Solis, LV, MS, PhD, DACVIM-LA

Dr. Navas de Solis will delve into the advancements in wearables and its critical role in monitoring and assessing the cardiovascular fitness, health and injury prevention of equine athletes.  Dr. Navas de Solis will explore how modern mobile health technology provide detailed insights into cardiac health and fitness, allowing for early detection of abnormalities that could affect performance and health.   He will also discuss the practical applications of wearables in developing tailored training and treatment plans, ultimately enhancing the well-being and performance of equine athletes.
