The American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is pleased to present our annual continuing education program virtually! Leilani Alvarez, DVM, DACVSMR
Dr. Leilani Alvarez is the Director of Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She is a board-certified diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and certified in veterinary acupuncture, canine rehabilitation and advanced Chinese herbal medicine. Dr. Alvarez graduated with high honors from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and completed her internship and residency at the Animal Medical Center.
She has been practicing integrative veterinary medicine for over a decade and leads one of few traditional residency programs in canine sports med/rehab. In addition to running a busy integrative and rehabilitation practice, Dr. Alvarez is a frequent lecturer at national and international conferences, teaches interns and residents and has published peer review articles and book chapters. She is also fluent in Spanish. Her research interests include geriatric medicine, regenerative therapies and joint supplements.
Bryan Torres, DVM, PhD, DACVS-SA, DACVSMR
Dr. Torres is an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery and Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at the University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine. He is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR). He received his B.S. from Clemson University and his DVM from the University of Georgia (UGA). After graduation he stayed at UGA for a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery.
Following his internship, he worked for several years as a small animal practitioner in the Atlanta area. He then returned to UGA to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on gait analysis, musculoskeletal biomechanics, and osteoarthritis. He then stayed at UGA for a small animal surgical residency followed by a PhD in physiology. He has research interests in gait and motion analysis, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and osteoarthritis and pain management.
Stephanie Valberg, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVSMR
Stephanie Valberg is the Mary Anne McPhail Dressage Chair in Equine Sports Medicine at Michigan State University. USA. She received her DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College and completed a Ph.D. in equine exercise physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. She is a board certified in internal medicine and equine sports medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Valberg’s research and clinical practice centers on neuromuscular diseases in horses with a special focus on genetic diseases of skeletal muscle and their nutritional management.
Dr. Valberg was inducted into the Equine Research Hall of Fame in 2012 and presented the 2012 Milne lecture at AAEP. She has received several awards including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis in 2019, CL Davis Foundation Journal Award Veterinary Pathology 2016, British Equine Veterinary Association Clinical Award 2014, University of Minnesota’s Postdoctoral Mentor 2013, MVMA outstanding faculty award 2013, and the 2001 and 2010 Pfizer Award for Research Excellence.
